The domestic CCTV market has increased considerably over the last few years with the influx of quality imported equipment at reasonably affordable prices.
The old method of recording to VHS video cassettes has now been preceded with the introduction of the Digital Video recorder (DVR) with built in hard-drive recording facility. These can link them to a traditional Video or PC enabling you to copy out the evidence. They also control the images from multiple cameras, where as before we needed an expensive Multiplexor.
With a DVR, the recording can be programmed to either stop once the disc if full or to loop and start recording over the oldest data, so that you can always retain the latest pre-determined period of time, depending on the size of the disk (80Gb, 120Gb, 250Gb, and so on).
It is easy in a domestic situation to keep at least 3-4 weeks images, so without having to touch the system for months, you can always see the last few weeks data. (ie after returning from holiday, or whenever an incident takes place.)
